Cypress College Library developed a textbook collection to meet the increasing demand from students. Special funding has always been used to purchase this material as it is outside the scope of the library's Collection Development Policy.

The textbooks receive extremely heavy usage and are also considered to be at high-risk for theft. To ensure that they are available to students in a timely manner, some special precautions are observed.

All material is on a 2-hour, library use only loan period. As a general rule, no exceptions are made to this policy. DSP&S staff may make arrangements for their students to take material to the center to use with adaptive equipment. These arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis and the two hour loan period applies.

Only textbooks in the same subject area may be checked out at the same time. Once those textbooks are returned, students may then check out textbooks in another subject area.

Renewals are made at the discretion of the circulation staff. If material is being heavily used, renewals will be denied. If the item is not heavily used it may be renewed for an additional 2 hours. If staff is not sure what the usage pattern is, renewal should be denied. Students must wait 30 minutes before being allowed to re-check out the item.

Fines are $1.00 an hour with a maximum fine of $20.00 per item. A 15-minute grace period is observed.

Student abuse of the textbook collection may result in their loss of textbook privileges or other disciplinary action by the college. Decisions on disciplinary action will be made by the Library Dean in consultation with the Circulation Supervisor and the Library Department Coordinator.
