In Advance of ‘Active Shooter’ Drill Employee Training Opportunities

In consideration of the upcoming February 26 drills (one morning and one evening) on Active Shooter situations, employees are encouraged to consider several upcoming training opportunities. They are listed below. Registration for these options is available via the myGateway Staff Development Site (see your email for instructions).

#1) Active Shooter Training
An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Today they can occur in malls, movie theaters, salons, post office, and schools. All employees and students can help prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations. This workshop provides guidance to individuals, including managers, faculty, staff and students, so that they can prepare to respond to an active shooter situation.

#2) If you see something, say something:  A one-hour workshop on Threat Assessment
Cypress College has a Threat Assessment Team who can assist you in determining if a student is a perceived threat versus if a student should be dealt with through the student conduct and discipline process.  A threat reporting process has been developed which will assist workshop participants identify the type of threats.  In addition, the facilitators will provide workshop participants with examples of the type of threats in order to ensure that risks are identified and addressed in an appropriate and timely manner.  Additional topics will include: support services available for students and differentiating between incidents involving student discipline and Campus Safety.

#3) Stryker Evacuation Training
One critical component during an emergency is the evacuation of disabled persons and persons with persons with mobility impairments from multilevel facilities.  Cypress College houses ten Stryker evacuation chairs for this purpose.  This two hour course will provide participants with guidelines on the use of the Stryker Chair, demonstrations, and practical application in the use of the Stryker Evacuation Chair.

#4) Floor Marshal Training
Floor Marshals serve as a resource to provide safety and security information to other staff and students, during emergency situations. Floor marshals also to facilitate the safe evacuation of campus buildings and assist emergency first responders. This two hour Floor Marshall Training will provide participants with knowledge of their duties and actions to be followed during an emergency.
