In this course you will have an added opportunity to meet with opera singers and directors when possible.
Course Description
This course is an intoduction to the standard operatic repertoire in terms of development of musical style, dramatic structure, and performance tradition. Emphasis is on the elements of the art of operatic singing, voice classification, vocal range, technique, and dramatic values.Opportunities for attendance at operatic performances will be provided.

Honors Information
The Honors Introduction to Opera Course (Music 118 H) is designed to provide a broader intellectual experience with increased critical thinking, analysis, discussion and/or writing skills. Honors students will extend the range of reference matierials to include opera libretti, opera music journals such as Opera News and online resources from major opera companies such as the New York Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera,.Los Angeles Opera and San Diego Opera.
Opera Attendance Requirement and Review
We will be attending 1 live opera performance A Night at the Opera and watching 2 opera DVD's called Opera Movie Nights in class. A schedule and ticket information will be given the first Orientation meeting. Students will complete an Opera Review for the live opera presentation.
