Registered Nursing Simulation

In the Clinical Simulation Lab, students interact with their peers and a high-tech manikin, called a human patient simulator, in a simulated clinical environment in order to experience patient care scenarios that are relevant to their current area of study and that one would expect to encounter during a current clinical rotation.

Simulation involves four components:

Pre-Simulation Preparation- This provides scheduling instructions, learning objectives, and an assignment that lists questions related to a specific patient care situation.  The assignment must be completed and brought to the simulation session.

Clinical Simulation Session- This provides the opportunity for the development or enhancement of clinical skills in a low stress, safe envrionment.  The patient simulator, equipment, supplies, and surroundings simulate an actual patient and clinical setting.

Post-Simulation Debriefing Session- This provides post-simulation small group dialogue by the simulation session participants.  Debriefing is facilitated simulation student observer and the clinical faculty member.

Post-Simulation Reflection- This allows for self-examination of student perfromance in light of her/his own clinical knowledge and performance.  Students can then remedy their own knowledge deficits and practice clinical skills.

All RN students participate in clinical simulation.  During your simulated scenario, you will be either an active participant or an observer/recorder.  Students are responsible for abiding by policies, orienting themselves to the simulation process, use of manikin and the environment, preparing for simulations and participating in simulations and debriefing.
