Tutoring Services

Q: What tutoring services do you offer?
A: The LRC offers one-on-one and small group tutoring. Please check with staff at the front counter for availabiltiy.  Cypress College also offers online tutoting provided through Smarthinking.


Q: What is the MLC?
A: The MLC stands for the Mathematics Learning Center.  The MLC is a large room where students can come to do their homework and get quick assistance with their Math and Physics courses from tutors and Cypress College faculty members.  It is a group tutoring environment, so tutors and faculty members circulate the room to assist students; however, one-on-one tutoring is also available for Math and Physics.  Appointments can be made by calling 714-484-7183 or stopping by the front desk of the LRC.

Q: When is the MLC open?
A: Please check the MLC Tutoring web page for current hours of operation.

Q: Where is the MLC located?
A: The MLC is located on the first floor of the Cypress College LLRC in room 127.

Making Appointments

Q: How do I make an appointment for a tutoring session?
A: To make an appointment, call 714-484-7183 or stop by the front counter of the Learning Resource Center (LRC).  Please bring your Cypress College, Fullerton College, or School of Continuing Education ID with you.

Q: Can I book an appointment myself online?
A: We currently do not offer online appointment booking.

Q: Can I make an appointment with the tutor directly?
A: No.  Please make all appointments with the staff at the front desk.

Q: How long are tutoring sessions?
A: Each one-on-one tutoring session is thirty minutes.  However, if you are an DSS & EOPS student, you may have one hour.  Please bring your student ID to confirm your program affiliation.

Q: Do I have to make an appointment to see a tutor?
A: No.  Walk-in appointments may be available depending on tutor availability.  However, we strongly recommend making an appointment to guarantee seeing a tutor. 

Q: How far in advance can I make appointments?
A: Appointments can be made up to one week in advance. We recommend scheduling an appointment at least 24 hours ahead of time.

Appointment Policies

Q: How many tutoring sessions am I allowed in a week?
A: Students are allowed two sessions per subject per week.

Q: Do the twice-a-week limits apply per subject, or does that include all visits made to any subject?
A: The twice a week limit only applies to subject.  For example, if a student has two appointments with an English tutor in one week, that student can also have two appointments with a Biology or chemistry tutor in the same week.

Q: Can you tell me what will be on the exam or how the instructor will test on the material?
A: No.  The tutor can only help you with your assignments leading up to the test.  It is recommended to check with your instructor to see how best to study for your exams.

Q: What happens if I am late for an appointment?
A: After ten minutes, you are marked as a missed appointment and will need to reschedule for another day.  Please call ahead if you are running late to reschedule.

Q: What if I need to cancel/ reschedule my appointment?
A: Please call or stop by the front desk of the LRC to cancel or reschedule your appointment as soon as possible.

Q: What happens if I miss my appointment and don’t call in?
A: You will be marked as a no show.  If you fail to show up for three appointments without canceling in advance, you will not be allowed to schedule any further tutoring appointments for the current semester.  

Coming Prepared

Q: What should I bring to my tutoring session?
A: Please come prepared.  Bring your courses syllabus, the instructions for the particular assignment with which you need assistance and anything else related which may be helpful.

Q: Should I bring a paper copy of my assignment, or can I bring a flash drive or my laptop?
A: Bring a hard copy of any materials you will need help with. The tutors do not have printing access.
