SLO Assessment vs. Grading

A course grade is a general measure of a student’s overall performance in a college course. That grade does not necessarily specify the extent to which that student has learned all of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities that they were intended to learn in a course. Grades provide a GENERAL performance level for individual students. SLO assessment results provide the SPECIFIC level of learning of a particular skill for a general group of students. Through SLOs we can identify the most important, overarching skills that students need to learn within a course. Then we can analyze how well, as a whole, students are learning those skills.
