Cypress, Calif. - The 2006 Cypress Baseball season opened Friday afternoon at home with a big win to start things out. San Diego Mesa could not match the hitting of Cypress as the Chargers won 8-2. Sophomore infielder Taylor Green went 2 for 4 including a two-run home run in the third to start the Charger scoring.
The Olympians started the scoring with a one run homer in the second. The Chargers struck back the next inning with Green’s home run. Freshman pitcher Jason Schnitzer started his first collegiate game facing 17 batters allowing 5 hits. The Charger lead was extended in the fourth as Matt Miller scored off of Mike Evola’s single. Two more runs scored with the next at bat with Evola and Bubba Ruddy scoring off of Garret Green’s single. After gaining a four run cushion, sophomore right-hander Wes Etheridge replaced Schnitzer striking out 4 and allowing 1 inherited run in the fifth. There was no letup in scoring as Mike Vass and Blaine Wilson scored off of Joel Weeks’s single. Freshman pitcher Casey Arbiso came in to close in the ninth for his first collegiate game.
