Cypress, Calif. - Scoring was slow and steady for the Chargers as they took one run at a time and held on to the lead for a 5 to 3 victory over College of the Canyons. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach had his second 10 putout game of the season allowing no stolen bases.
Cypress started in the first when sophomore Taylor Green had an RBI to bring in Garret Young to score. The second inning was similar as Ben Ornelas scored on an error, and in the third, Taylor Green had a solo home run to take Cypress to a 3-0 lead. Green ended the game with 2 RBIs and a homerun. The fourth inning brought in another Charger run as Young batted in Mike Evola. Young finished the game going 2 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and an RBI. The Charger offense was assisted by starting pitcher Josh Tamba who held the Cougars hitless until the fifth inning. Tamba finished in over 6 innings with 7 strikeouts. The Cougars threatened as they scored three runs to bring the score to 3-4 in the bottom of the eighth. Brandon Laird made sure to put some distance between themselves and the Cougars by belting a solo home run in the eighth. Laird is on a nine-game hit streak batting a team high .442 for the Chargers. Pitcher Nick Rhodes came in to pitch the last three innings and earned his first save of the season eliminating three in a row to end the game.
The Chargers move on to the third game of their four-game home series as they face San Diego City College Friday at 2:00 pm. San Diego is 6-4 this season.
