Cypress Wins Conference Opener

Irvine, Calif. - Orange Empire Conference play began Thursday as Cypress traveled to Irvine Valley to face the Lasers. Cypress was riding a three game win streak all won at home. The Chargers scored 3 early and held on to win 3-2. Sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks went 3 for 3 at the plate including an RBI and a stolen base.
Cypress waited till the second to strike scoring 2 unearned runs. Freshman Brandon Laird reached base on an error. Two batters later Laird scored off of an attempted double play. Weeks followed with a single to put runners on first and third. Weeks stole second and the catcher threw the ball away so Mike Vass could score. Irvine Valley followed with a run of their own to bring the score to 2-1. At the top of the fourth, Laird singled and advanced to second on an error and then to third on another error. Weeks then had another single to score Laird for their third run. Laird finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 runs. Starting pitcher Josh Tamba was replaced by Wes Etheridge in the bottom of the 8th. Tamba finished with the win to go 3-1 on this season allowing 5 hits, 1 earned run, and 5 strikeouts. IVC scored one in the eighth to close the lead to 1 but were denied any more runs for the Cypress win. Etheridge finished the game allowing one earned run off of 2 hits and earned the save.
Cypress stays on the road heading to Orange Coast College for another conference match up. Orange Coast is 12-4 thus far. The Chargers and Pirates will face off Saturday at Orange Coast College at noon.
