Final Stats
Costa Mesa, Calif. - Scoring was fast and furious for Cypress early and were threatened by a late OCC run. Cypress held on to win 14-9 off of 15 hits. Garrett Green led the Chargers going 3 for 3 on the day including 2 doubles while scoring 4 runs and 3 walks.
Orange Coast started the scoring with a run in the first but Cypress answered back strong with 5 runs in the second. Blaine Wilson started the scoring with a double to score Matt Miller. Ben Ornelas followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Matt Wallach. Mike Vass then singled to score Wilson. Brandon Laird followed with a single to score Garrett Green and Joel Weeks. To end the inning with 5 runs on 6 hits.
The Pirates answered with 2 runs but the Chargers were unfazed scoring again in the third with an Ornelas solo homerun, his second of the season. Cypress went into the fourth with a 6-3 lead and kept piling the runs on. Miller doubled to score Garret Green, Wallach singled to score Taylor Green, and then Miller scored on a wild pitch for 3 runs in the fourth. The fifth inning was a similar story as Weeks scored on a wild pitch and then Miller doubled to score Taylor Green and Garrett Green for another 3 runs.
OCC scored a run in the fifth and sixth to narrow the score to 12-5 after the sixth. Cypress scored again in the seventh as Laird singled to score Garrett Green again. The Pirate’s bats woke up in the eighth to threaten Cypress with 4 runs to narrow the lead to 4. Cypress added their last run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly by Miller to score Weeks. Wes Etheridge retired three batters while walking one in the ninth to end the Pirate scoring threat. Etheridge was credited with a save for the game, his third of the season. Sean Kalmen was credited with a win against OCC, his first of the season. Mark Serrano started the game pitching 4 innings striking out 4.
The Chargers have a few days off before heading to Golden West to play the Rustlers. This is their first meeting with Golden West this year. Golden West is 14-6 this season and 1-1 in conference. The teams will face off on Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Golden West.
