Cypress, Calif. - Cypress had their second double-digit run game in a row and was able to keep Saddleback scoring at bay to defeat the Gauchos 15-3. Sophomore outfielder Mike Vass followed his homerun on Saturday with two homeruns Tuesday against the Gauchos. He belted a two-run homerun in the third and followed with a grand slam in the fourth to bring his total to 5 homeruns on the season to lead the Chargers. Vass was 3 for 3 again with 7 RBIs.
The tone was set early as Cypress drove in 5 runs in the first. The Chargers loaded the bases before the Chargers hit 5 singles in a row to score 5 runs on 8 hits in the first. Cypress took an inning off before coming back in the third to add more runs. Sophomore Blaine Wilson got his first triple of the year to score sophomore catcher Matt Wallach. Wallach finished the game 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Vass then belted his first homerun of the game to score himself and third baseman Joel Weeks for a total of 3 runs in the third.
The bleeding continued in the fourth as Wallach singled to score Garrett Green and sophomore designated hitter Matt Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Taylor Green. These runs were followed by Vass’s grand slam homer to score Weeks, Wallach, and freshman first baseman Brandon Laird. Cypress was up 13-0 after just four innings of play and added on one more in the sixth as the bases were loaded and freshman Kenneth Lusk walked to score Weeks. Cypress stopped scoring while Saddleback ended the game with 3 runs earned in the eighth and ninth. Sophomore right-hander David Stokes pitched the first 6 innings holding the Gauchos scoreless while allowing just 3 hits, walking 1 batter, and striking out 4.
Cypress has a day off before heading to Fullerton to face the Hornets Thursday. Fullerton is 7-12 on the season and 2-4 in conference. The teams will face off Thursday at 2:00 pm at Fullerton.
