Chargers Give up One Run Early But Hold on for Win

Fullerton, Calif. - With a Santa Ana loss to Irvine Valley, Cypress took sole possession of first place in Conference with a win over Fullerton. The Chargers got a few runs early and held the Hornets to 1 run for the 4-1 conference victory. Cypress is now one game ahead of Santa Ana in conference. Sophomore right hander Wes Etheridge came in to pitch in the sixth allowing no hits, and striking out 5 in 4 innings to earn the save.
Cypress started the game with two runs in the first. Sophomore outfielder Garret Young walked to start the inning. Sophomore second baseman Garret Green was up next and drove in Young with his fourth double of the season. Two batters later, Sophomore outfielder Blaine Wilson singled to score Garret Green. Cypress gave up one run in the first to hold the lead at 2-1.
Sophomore left hander Nick Rhodes started the game and retired 11 batters in a row after the first and earned the win to maintain his perfect record at 6-0. Cypress scored again in the third as Young reached first on an error and stole second for his 10th stolen base of the season. Garrett Green flied out to right to advance Young to third before freshman first baseman Brandon Laird hit a sacrifice fly to score Young.
In the seventh, the Chargers drove home their fourth and final run. Sophomore outfielder Mike Vass singled and stole second. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach flied out to center to advance Vass to third. Sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks placed a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to score Vass. Etheridge closed the game striking out the last two batters and sealing the victory.
The Chargers head back home Tuesday for a rematch against Irvine Valley. The Chargers were victorious earlier this season as they defeated the Lasers 3-2 at IVC. Irvine Valley is 12-11 on the season and 3-4 in conference. They are coming off of an upset win over Santa Ana 8-1. The teams will face off Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
