Cypress, Calif. - The last time Cypress met Irvine Valley, the Chargers barely came out victorious 3-2. This time the Chargers would face the Lasers at home and would have a more comfortable victory 7-3. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach was 1 for 3 against the Lasers with a sacrifice fly for 2 RBIs on the day.
The game began tit for tat as Irvine Valley scored one run in the second and Cypress followed with a run of their own as sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks singled to right to score sophomore outfielder Blaine Wilson. Scoring remained stagnant as the Chargers went into the bottom of the fifth tied at 1. Weeks led off the inning with a walk before sophomore outfielder Mike Vass blasted his team leading sixth homerun for two runs. The Chargers continued their fifth inning push when Wallach belted a sacrifice fly to score sophomore second baseman Garrett Green. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Green scored next on a Laser error and the fifth run of the inning came as sophomore designated hitter Matt Miller doubled to left to score freshman first baseman Brandon Laird.
Irvine Valley scored again in the seventh to bring the score to 6-2 in favor of the Chargers. Cypress answered back with a run as Wallach singled to score Garret Green for Wallach’s second RBI. Irvine Valley made it interesting as they scored in the ninth and loaded the bases with the tying run at bat. Sophomore right-hander Wes Etheridge came in to take care of the last out as he notched his fifth save of the season. Freshman right-hander Josh Tamba started the game to earn the win pitching 6.2 innings to improve his record to 4-2.
Cypress has one day off before heading off to Irvine Valley to face the Lasers for their third game of the year. Cypress is still first in the conference ahead of Santa Ana by one game. Irvine Valley falls to 3-5 in conference. Cypress will face the Lasers at IVC at 2:00 pm Thursday.
