The Bottom of the Lineup Capitalizes to Defeat IVC for the Third Time

Final Stats

Irvine, Calif. - The Chargers just defeated Irvine Valley at home Tuesday and headed out for an immediate rematch Thursday at IVC. The Chargers defeated the Lasers for the third time this year sweeping IVC for the 2006 Orange Empire Conference season. Cypress won this match up 5-2 holding on after a late run by the Lasers. Freshman designated hitter Ben Ornelas paced the Chargers going 2 for 3 against IVC and scored 1 run.

Both teams’ pitchers held batters scoreless in the first three innings before the top of the fourth as starting pitcher David Stokes retired the first 9 batters in a row. Ornelas hit a single and reached second on an error to score sophomore catcher Matt Wallach. Sophomore outfielder Mike Vass belted his fifth double of the year to score Ornelas, and was followed by a single by sophomore outfielder Mike Evola to score Ornelas. The Chargers ended the fourth with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Lasers crept back into the game scoring a run in the seventh and eighth to close the lead to 1. Cypress answered back by capitalizing off of Laser errors to score Vass and Evola for the last two runs. Sophomore right-hander Wes Etheridge came in to relieve in the seventh to earn his sixth save of the season allowing just one hit and allowing no earned runs. Stokes earned the win striking out 6 batters to improving his record to 4-2.

Cypress betters their record to 20-5 overall and 8-1 in conference. The Chargers are one game ahead of Santa Ana in first place in the Orange Empire Conference. Cypress returns home for a Saturday conference match up with last year’s OEC champions Orange Coast College. OCC is 4-5 in conference, 4 games behind the Chargers. The last time Cypress faced OCC this year, Cypress won 14-9. The teams will meet up Saturday at noon at Cypress.
