Cypress Rustles up Four Homers in Victory over Golden West

Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers are holding on to a one game lead in the Orange Empire Conference being chased by Santa Ana. The Chargers cannot afford to lose a game and made sure Golden West could not play spoiler scoring 7 runs early and holding on to win 9-4. The Chargers belted 4 homers out of the park including one by sophomore shortstop Taylor Green for his fifth of the season. Taylor Green went 3 for 4 including a homerun, a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
The Chargers faltered early giving up two hits and a run in the first. Cypress struck back in their first at bat as sophomore second baseman Garrett Green was hit by a pitch to reach first and was followed by a double by Taylor Green to move Garrett Green to third. Freshman first baseman Brandon Laird drove a sacrifice fly to center to score Garrett Green. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Miller was the next Charger up and drove a stand-up double to center to score Taylor Green. Another double followed as Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach hit the third double of the inning to center to score Miller. There was no let up as the very next batter freshman outfielder Blaine Wilson belted a two run homer, his fourth of the season, to put the Chargers up 5-1 after just one inning.
At the bottom of the second with two outs, Garrett Green singled to right before Taylor Green belted a two run homer, his fourth of the year to increase the Charger lead to 7-1. Freshman right hander Josh Tamba retired 9 batters in a row till the top of the fourth when he hit a batter but kept them scoreless in the inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Green got his third hit in three at bats with a single to center but was stranded on base as the next two batters were retired. The Rustlers woke up in the top of the sixth with two doubles in a row for their second run. Sophomore right-hander Jason Shimizu came in to relieve and get the last out of the inning to keep Golden West at 2 runs.
The Rustlers scored a run in the eighth and the Chargers found themselves in trouble with one out, the bases loaded, and the tying run at bat before sophomore right hander Wes Etheridge came in to relieve. The Rustlers scored one more but Etheridge got two outs in a row to end the top of the eighth with Chargers holding on to a lead 7-4. Cypress was kept scoreless for five straight innings before Miller’s at bat in the eighth when he belted a solo homerun for his third of the year. Miller’s homer was followed by a solo homerun by Wallach after being just feet away from homeruns in his two previous at bats. Cypress went into the ninth with a 9-4 lead. Freshman right-hander Casey Arbiso came in to close in the ninth and retired three batters in a row to end the game.
Cypress will try to make it a season sweep of Golden West in their next game on Saturday at Golden West. The Chargers have outscored the Rustlers 23-10 this season. The teams will face off Saturday at Golden West at noon.
