Chargers Pull Away from Golden West in the Late Innings

Taylor Green Green had 4 RBIs Saturday.
Rustlers give Chargers a scare in the sixth.

Final Stats

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Cypress was coming off of a home win against the Rustlers and traveled to Golden West for an immediate rematch. This time around the Chargers made a late run to put distance between themselves and the Rustlers to win 9-2. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Green provided plenty of offense with 4 RBIs going 3 for 4 including 2 doubles.

Both teams were kept scoreless through four innings until the Chargers starting things off in the fifth. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach led off the inning with a double followed immediately by a single by third baseman Joel Weeks to put runners on the corners before both runners stole a base so Wallach could score. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Green singled to put men on the corners again. Taylor Green followed with his first double of the day to score both Weeks and Garrett Green. The Chargers gave up one unearned run in the fifth but held the lead at 3-1.

The Rustlers gave Cypress a scare in the sixth scoring a run and had a man on third with two outs. Sophomore right-hander Wes Etheridge came in and struck out the last batter to keep a narrow Charger lead 3-2. Cypress got their two run lead back scoring a run in the seventh. Weeks was hit by a pitch to reach first and was moved over by a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Garrett Young. Taylor Green got his second double of the day to score Weeks.

Cypress bats caught fire in the eighth. Sophomore outfielder Blaine Wilson started the offense with a double. Wallach singled to score Wilson. Weeks walked to put a man on first and second and freshman outfielder Kenny Lusk tripled in his only at bat of the game for 2 RBIs scoring Weeks and Wallach. Garret Green followed with an RBI single and Taylor Green got his fourth RBI of the day with a single. 5 runs in the eighth put the game out of reach for the Rustlers and the Chargers ended the game 9-2. Sophomore pitcher Nick Rhodes earned the win to improve his record to a perfect 7-0 after pitching 5.2 innings and striking out 7.

Cypress improves to 25-4, and maintains their place in first with a 12-1 conference record. Cypress meets their conference rivals Santa Ana next at Santa Ana on Wednesday. Santa Ana is second behind the Chargers with a conference record of 10-3. The Dons handed Cypress their only conference loss thus far on March 9th at the Cypress field. Santa Ana outscored Cypress 11-8 that meeting. Cypress goes into this pivotal match up Thursday at 2:00 pm at Santa Ana.
