Santa Ana, Calif. - The last time these two rivals met, Santa Ana spoiled the Chargers’ win streak and undefeated conference record beating the Chargers at Cypress 11-8 handing Cypress their only conference defeat so far. Cypress traveled to Santa Ana this time looking for revenge and finding it in a 13-5 rout of the second place Dons. This puts Santa Ana three games behind the Chargers in the chase for the conference championship. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Green paced Cypress from the plate going 4 for 5 with a two-run homerun, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs scored.
Cypress came out looking like they were on a mission with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Garrett Young led off with a double to center followed by Garrett Green’s first hit of the day, a single, to score Young while Garrett Green advanced to second on the throw. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Green made the Chargers 3 for 3 on the day with a single to drive in Garrett Green. Sophomore outfielder Blaine Wilson singled to move Taylor Green to second and then advanced to third on the fielder’s choice the next play. Sophomore outfielder Mike Vass singled to third to score Taylor Green. The Chargers ended the top of the first with 3 runs on 5 hits leaving 2 on base.
Santa Ana answered back with a run in the first but could not catch up ending the first 3-1 in favor of Cypress. There was no let up in the top of the second as Cypress capitalized on Santa Ana errors. Sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks reached base on a fielding error. Garrett Green got his second hit of the day singling to right and then advancing to second on an error as Weeks advanced to third and then scored on the error. Taylor Green grounded out but scored Garrett Green giving Cypress an early 5-1 lead.
Cypress took an inning off before 2 more runs in the fourth on back-to-back homeruns. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach belted a solo shot to lead off the inning for his third homerun of the year. Weeks followed with a homerun of his own, his first of the season. The Chargers followed with two more runs in the seventh as Taylor Green singled followed by a triple by freshman first baseman Brandon Laird to drive in Taylor Green. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Miller grounded out to the shortstop but it was enough to score Laird for the 9-1 lead. Another two run inning was to follow in the eighth. Freshman outfielder Kenny Lusk singled to get on base before Garrett Green’s two-run homer. The Chargers finally gave up a run in the eighth. Sophomore right-hander David Stokes pitched 7 innings allowing just 4 hits and earned the win to go 5-2.
Cypress was not done with scoring as they had their third two-run inning in a row in the ninth. Freshman catcher Bubba Ruddy singled to left before another single by Weeks. Both runners advanced on a passed ball for two men in scoring position. Freshman first baseman Luis Barrera reached base on an error and both Ruddy and Weeks scored the 12th and 13th run for Cypress. Santa Ana scored three runs in the ninth but could not catch Cypress.
This lengthens Cypress’s lead in the Orange Empire Conference and is now 3 games ahead of the second place Dons. Santa Ana will have a chance to strike back tomorrow as the Chargers host Santa Ana Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm. The winner of this game determines the winner of this year’s series between the conference rivals and would help Santa Ana catch up to Cypress. The teams will face off Thursday at 2:30 at Cypress.
