Tigers Hand Chargers Their Second Conference Loss

Riverside, Calif. - Cypress made the trip to Riverside for a tough match-up against the tigers Tigers who are ranked second behind the Chargers in Southern California RPI. The Chargers could not hold back Riverside’s scoring losing 3-9 for their second conference loss. Cypress now falls to 14-2 in conference but maintain a 4 game lead in first with 5 conference games remaining. Freshman designated hitter Ben Ornelas paced the Chargers going 2 for 2 including his second triple of the year. Ornelas finished with an RBI and one run scored.
Cypress and Riverside were at a stalemate after 4 and a half innings before the Tigers broke out for 3 runs in the fifth. Cypress answered with their first run in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks led the inning off with a double to right. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Green singled to center to move Weeks to third before sophomore shortstop Taylor Green grounded into a double play but allowed Weeks to score. Riverside matched the run with another in the sixth for the 4-1 lead headed to the top of the seventh.
The Chargers took advantage of a Tiger error to score in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach reached third on an error and Ornelas singled to score Wallach. Cypress could not hold the Tigers offense down allowing another hit in the seventh and then four more in the eighth. The Chargers were down 2-9 heading into the ninth and tried to mount a comeback run. Ornelas led off with a triple and was followed by a ground out by freshman pinch hitter Eddie Agredano to score Ornelas. The next two Charger batters were retired in order to end the game in favor of Riverside 9-3.
If Cypress can win one of their next five games, they will clench at least a share of the Orange Empire Conference. Cypress will have a chance to avenge this loss Thursday as they host Riverside. So far this season they have split the series as Cypress won the first match up 14-13. Riverside is now tied for second in conference four games behind Cypress. The Chargers will host the Tigers Thursday at 2:30 pm.
