Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted the Gauchos Tuesday hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s loss to Saddleback. The Chargers bounced back and more making a statement off of 4 homeruns and a shutout for the 9-0 victory. The Chargers were bolstered by two homeruns by sophomore first baseman Blaine Wilson, and two more from sophomore outfielder Mike Vass. This victory lets Cypress hold on to a four game lead with just five conference games remaining.
Cypress started defensively allowing a double but stranding the runner and escaping the inning without allowing a run. Cypress was held scoreless as well as the Gauchos turned a double play to end the first. The Chargers would not be denied in the second as Vass led off with a solo homerun, his first of the day. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach was up next and was hit by the first pitch to reach first. Designated hitter Matt Miller reached on a walk moving Wallach to second. Sophomore second baseman Joel Weeks got the second hit of the inning with a single to load the bases. Sophomore outfielder Garrett Young walked a run in for an RBI and the second Charger run. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Green accounted for the third hit of the inning with a short single to center to score Miller and Weeks. Cypress ended the inning with a 4-0 lead.
A four run lead would not be comfortable for Cypress as they gave up a four run lead to the Gauchos just four days earlier. The Chargers would answer the challenge by retiring the next three Gauchos in a row. Vass led off the third again and drove a carbon copy solo homerun to left for his 2nd homerun of the game, 9th of the season, and 5th against the Gauchos this year. Cypress would follow with another homer as Wilson got a solo shot to center. Cypress would end the inning with a 6-0 lead.
The Chargers kept up the defense keeping the Gauchos scoreless including a three strikeout sixth inning which was part of a streak of nine batters retired by starting pitcher Josh Tamba. Cypress took a break from scoring until the seventh. Freshman third baseman Brandon Laird led off with a single and was moved to second when freshman designated hitter Ben Ornelas was hit by a pitch. Wilson drove in his second homerun of the game to score three runs, his 6th of the season to give Cypress the 9-0 lead that would last for the rest of the game. Tamba earned the win for Cypress pitching seven innings allowing just 4 hits and striking out 6.
The Chargers finish with two games against Fullerton before the Orange Empire Conference Tournament. The last time the Chargers met up with the Hornets, Cypress won 4-1. Fullerton hosts first as Cypress heads to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday for a night game at 7:00 pm.
