Cypress, Calif. - Orange Coast visited Cypress Thursday in another Orange Empire Conference mini-tournament match-up. Unfortunately for OCC, the Chargers were not very welcoming hosts scoring 9 runs in fourth inning for an eventual 13-2 victory. This was the Chargers’ last regular season home game. Freshman right-hander Josh Tamba earned the win with the first five innings allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out 8. Tamba’s record improves to 9-3 this season.
Cypress started it off in the second with one run off one hit in a team effort. Sophomore catcher Matt Wallach got his 8th double of the year to lead off. Freshman first baseman Brandon Laird grounded out but moved Wallach to third. Sophomore outfielder Blaine Wilson drove a sacrifice fly deep into right, Wallach tagged up and slid home to beat the throw for Cypress’s first run of the day.
The Cypress bats caught fire in bottom of the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Mike Vass took advantage of a full count to get his 10th homerun of the season for Cypress’s second run. Wallach was up next and reached first on an error and then stole second. Laird was the next to reach base on error allowing Wallach to score. Wilson bounced one over the third baseman’s head for a single to score Laird. Freshman second baseman Eddie Agredano was the next batter to bounce one over an infielder’s head for a single moving Wilson to second. Freshman outfielder Kenny Lusk walked to load the bases for freshman designated hitter Ben Ornelas. Ornelas singled to right for 2 RBIs as Wilson and Agredano scored. Sophomore third baseman Joel Weeks laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Ornelas and Lusk to second and third. Sophomore shortstop Taylor Green walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. All three runners took advantage of a passed ball to take a base as Lusk scored. Back at the first batter of the inning, Vass walked to load the bases again. Wallach got a 2 RBI single as Green and Ornelas scored. Laird belted a sacrifice fly to right to score Vass. One batter later the inning was mercifully ended with the Chargers holding a commanding 10-0 lead.
The lead gave Cypress’s bench a chance to shine. The Chargers gave up 2 runs in the seventh before answering back with 2 of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch Hitter Justin Ariki got his first homerun of the season to start the Charger at bat. Agredano reached first on a walk and then second on a passed ball. Freshman designated hitter Shane Aguilar doubled to score Agredano for the 12th Charger run. In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore outfielder Mike Evola got his second homerun of the season for the 13th and final Charger run.
Cypress has one more regular season game before playoffs as they head to Saddleback Friday. The Chargers have met up with the Gauchos three times so far this year with Cypress winning two of the three so far. Saddleback is 13-10 in conference coming off of a one run loss to Fullerton. Saddleback hosts Cypress Friday at 2:30 pm.
