Cypress, Calif. - Last year around this time, Cypress had their State Championship hopes dashed by two loses to Santa Ana to end their run in the Super Regionals. The Chargers were in danger of a similar fate this year losing to Santa Ana early Saturday forcing Cypress into three must win games to make it out alive. Cypress flipped the situation on the Dons defeating Santa Ana early Sunday and then defeating them again in the afternoon 4-1 propelling Cypress to the final four State Championship tournament in Fresno next week. Sophomore right hander
Jason Fronczak made just his second start of the year and with the pressure on threw a complete game allowing just six hits on 107 pitches bringing his record to 2-0.
The Chargers would start on defense and made it a short run as Fronczak retired the first three in order. On the other side of the plate, Cypress started quick with a lead off single by sophomore outfielder
Blaine Wilson. Sophomore shortstop
Taylor Green would make it two on by being hit by a pitch. Freshman first baseman
Brandon Laird took the opportunity to drive in the first run with a single to right scoring Wilson. Sophomore catcher
Matt Wallach followed with a single up the middle bringing Green in.
Cypress brought more of the same defensively forcing two ground outs and a strikeout and stranding two runners in the second. Scoring would not happen again until the fifth. Freshman outfielder
Kenny Lusk reached on a fielder’s choice and then reached second on an error. Wilson followed with a hard single to center scoring Lusk to take the 3-0 lead. Fronczak and the Charger fielders continued the shutout including three straight outs in the fifth and the sixth. Sophomore outfielder
Mike Vass added on to the score with his fourteenth homerun of the season in the sixth extending the Charger lead to four.
Cypress would allow a run in the top of the eighth ending the shutout and bringing the score to 4-1. After being shut out in the bottom of the eighth, the Chargers would have three more outs to retire before the right to move on to the final four State Tournament in Fresno. As was the pattern for most of the game, Fronczak retired the batters in order with a fly out, ground out, and ground out ending the Dons’ season and giving Cypress the right to move on.
This will be the Chargers eighth appearance at the State Championship tournament under head coach
Scott Pickler. There they will face Sacramento City, Long Beach City, and the winner of the rain delayed Sierra and Santa Rosa game. Cypress has only faced off with Long Beach City this year losing in February 0-1 at Long Beach. The games begin Saturday at Fresno ending Monday with the championship game.
