Palm Desert, Calif. - Cypress played their second of three games at College of the Desert Friday facing Yuba. The Chargers wasted no time putting their bats to work for the 17-1 blowout win. Freshman second baseman Erik Hempe paced the Chargers with a three RBI homerun, three runs scored, and three hits.
The Chargers started it out taking advantage of Yuba errors throwing up seven unearned runs in the first inning. Cypress slowed it down comparably in the second with a double by sophomore first baseman AJ Smith who was drove in by a single by sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion. The Chargers put up another big inning in the fourth batting around the order again for six runs.
As Cypress continued to score, the Charger defense kept Yuba down. Sophomore left-hander Hunter Hewitt earned his first win of the year pitching the first four innings striking out three. Thomas Hoenshell, Alec Clifton, Dale Harder, and Richard Hanson combined to finish off the game allowing just two hits in five innings. Freshman catcher Jonathan Hurst led Cypress with four hits including a double for three RBI. Marmion also had three RBI going two-for-two on the day including a double.
