Chargers Hammer in Nine to Win

Matt Wolfrom Wolfrom earned his second win Thursday afternoon.
Cypress stays undefeated.

February 7th, 2008

Final Stats

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted their second of five straight home games Thursday facing the Pirates of Porterville. The Chargers drummed up 14 hits for nine runs in the 9-1 victory. Freshman left-hander Matt Wolfrom made his second start of the year and picked up his second win of the year with five solid innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out five with one earned run.

After an uneventful first inning, Cypress put a couple on the board in the second. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion started the hitting with a single through the left side. Freshman third baseman Erik Hempe got on base with an infield error and freshman leftfielder Brad Woodend singled to load the bases. Freshman center fielder Dennis Gerbasi took advantage with a single through the right side as Marmion and Hempe hustled home for the 2-0 lead.

Wolfrom kept the defensive innings going quick allowing a homerun in the third but striking two in the same inning. Cypress kept up the pace in the fourth with a couple more runs. Hempe started with a single to right and moved to second on a ground out. Gerbasi picked up his third RBI of the day with a single down the right field line as Hempe scored again. Freshman left fielder Garrett Leon reached on an error moving Gerbasi to third. Leon attempted a steal to second distracting the Pirate defense allowing Gerbasi to steal home for Cypress’s fourth run of the day.

Cypress came out swinging in the fifth. Sophomore first baseman AJ Smith led the inning off with a double off the right field wall. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke followed up with a single up the middle moving Smith to third. Freshman designated hitter Justin McGuire came up big in his first at-bat of the day with a three-run homer over the right field wall giving Cypress the commanding 7-1 lead.

The seventh inning brought more action with a two out double by McGuire in his second at-bat. Marmion switched places with McGuire knocking one off the left field wall scoring McGuire. Hempe drove in Marmion with a single to right bumping the Charger score up to nine.

Freshman Alec Clifton, sophomore Mike Pratali, freshman Richard Hanson, and freshman Colby Hyatt combined to pitch an inning each and allow no Pirate hits. Pratali finished his inning with three straight strikeouts.

Cypress improves to 6-0 this season and has a day off before two straight games this weekend. The Chargers will start with Santa Barbara on Saturday. The defending Western State Conference champs are 5-1 coming off of their first loss this season 5-1 to Hartnell. The two will face off Saturday at 1:00 pm at Cypress.
