Cypress, Calif. - It looked like trouble for Cypress’s undefeated record in the top of the first when the Chargers were down 3-0 quickly. The Charger offense made up for it quickly and the defense buckled down grinding out a 13-4 win. Freshman left fielder Justin McGuire put up a two run homer to start the Cypress scoring, his second homerun this season.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, Cypress caught up quickly. McGuire started it off with his homerun to cut the lead to one. The scoring continued quickly. A walk, single, and a sacrifice bunt later, and sophomore first baseman Jordan Lowe took advantage of runners in scoring position with a single to center to quickly take the lead 4-3 after the first.
Starting pitcher sophomore Alex Curry shook off an uncharacteristic first inning and buckled down from there retiring eleven batters in a row. While the Charger defense kept Chaffey at three, the offense kept going with a big third inning. After freshman third baseman Jonathan Hurst singled and stole second, sophomore designated hitter AJ Smith down the left field line so Hurst could score his second run of the day. After two outs, the real scoring started. With Smith at second after a walk, freshman catcher Parker Berberet singled through the right side to score Smith. Sophomore centerfielder Dennis Gerbasi followed with a two-RBI triple down the right field line. Freshman second baseman Garrett Leon then added a double to score Gerbasi despite a pitching change. After another walk, Hurst was up again in the inning to collect two RBI with a double down the left field line for a seven run, seven hit inning.
Cypress gave up one more run in the seventh but was quick to match with their own run. Berberet reached on a single and then hit second on a wild pitch. Sophomore second baseman Armando Gallardo came off the bench to drive in Berberet with a single to left. The Chargers topped it off with one more in the eighth. Freshman right fielder Garrett Blanke came off the bench to double down the left field line and freshman shortstop Erik Hempe drove him in with a single for run number thirteen. Freshman centerfielder Tyler Brady made it worse for Chaffey stealing a would-be two-run homerun in the ninth with a leaping catch at the wall. Curry improves to 3-0 pitching the first five innings allowing three earned runs and striking out five.
The Chargers improve to 8-0 and will attempt to go into their Nevada trip undefeated with a win over San Diego Mesa Tuesday. Cypress faces the Olympians in a rescheduled game Tuesday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
