Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers hosted San Diego Mesa in a rescheduled game that should have been the season opener. Cypress sped through the game in an hour and forty minutes for a win 3-1 remaining the only undefeated team in California at 9-0. Sophomore left hander Dale Harder made the start pitching through the first eight innings allowing no earned runs and just three hits while striking out eight batters for his second win improving to 2-0.
The pace was set early with both pitchers retiring batters quickly through the first four innings. The Olympians threatened to score first with a man on first and third. Harder quickly stamped out the threat with a strikeout to end the inning. Cypress finally had a breakthrough in the fifth with a solo homerun from sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion.
Mesa answered back after a double, and a failed pickoff landed the Olympian runner on third and then scored via sacrifice fly for an unearned run to tie it at one. Cypress took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore second baseman Armando Gallardo led off with a double down the left field line. Sophomore centerfielder Dennis Gerbasi laid down a bunt single and Gallardo hit third. Freshman third baseman Jonathan Hurst made it three hits in a row with a double off the centerfield wall to score Gallardo and take the lead. With Gerbasi at third, sophomore first baseman AJ Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right for Cypress’s third and final run.
The Cypress defense held allowing just one more hit after taking the lead. Sophomore right-hander Jarrett Semler came in in the ninth retiring the batters in order for his fourth save.
The Chargers improve to 9-0 and head to Nevada to face three out-of-state foes. Cypress will start the action Friday in Las Vegas against South Lake City at 7:00 pm.
