Another Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Cypress to a Win

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress was coming off a ninth inning heroic win Friday and were hoping to have an easier go of it Saturday afternoon against Oxnard. The Chargers needed all nine innings again staging another ninth inning comeback with a dramatic homerun for the 6-5 win. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion utilized his only at bat for the game winning walk-off homerun to eradicate the two run deficit in one swing of the bat and win the game for Cypress.
Cypress had a rough of it through the first eight innings. Cypress found themselves in trouble in just the top of the second with the bases loaded, one out, and one run already scored. Freshman right-hander Richard Hanson stepped and put up one out on an RBI fielder’s choice and then struck out the next batter swinging to stop the Oxnard scoring at two.
The Chargers put one up to answer the condors when freshman second baseman Garrett Leon hit a two out homer over the fence for his first collegiate homerun. Cypress made some more noise through the drizzle in the third. Sophomore shortstop Armando Gallardo walked followed by a walk by freshman catcher Jonathan Hurst. A ground out moved both into scoring position. Freshman designated hitter Justin McGuire produced in another clutch situation with two outs hitting a single to left for two RBI as Hurst and Gallardo trotted home to give Cypress the lead 3-2.
Oxnard bounced right back with a solo homerun in the fifth knotting it at three and took advantage of a double, balk, and wild pitch to take the lead 4-3. Cypress got in another jam in the eighth giving up a run and loading the bases with one out. The Charger infield was able to pull out a double play to hold Oxnard at five runs.
Cypress continued to be stymied at the plate until the storied ninth inning. With one out down, Leon singled down the left field line to kick off the rally. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet utilized his first at bat to walk and put two men on for Marmion. Marmion took the 0-1 pitch over the right field fence for a three run homerun and the Cypress win.
The Chargers utilized five pitchers in the contest with freshman Alec Clifton earning the win to improve to 1-0. Hanson pitched the majority of the game racking up four strikeouts and just two hits.
Cypress improves to 12-2 and remain undefeated at home and against California teams. The will be tested again tomorrow in a rescheduled game against Long Beach. Long Beach is 9-5 coming off of a 14-4 win over Antelope Valley. The two will meet up Sunday at 1:00 pm at Cypress.
