Riverside, Calif. - After an ugly defeat in the first round and a chaotic win in the second, Cypress kept it simple Saturday with a final round win over Saddleback. Cypress used a seven run second inning to coast to an 8-1 win over the Gauchos. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion led the Chargers going three for five including a double for two RBI.
The Chargers got going early with a run in the first to take the lead. With two outs down, sophomore left fielder Michael Nesbitt walked and reached third off a single. Sophomore first baseman AJ Smith finished it off with a single down the left field line bringing Nesbitt home for the first run.
Cypress broke it open in the second with seven of their eight runs. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet led off with a single to right and moved to third off a single from sophomore designated hitter Parker Berberet. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi reached on a fielder’s choice but Berberet was out on the play. Freshman second baseman Garrett Leon loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Marmion took advantage with a two RBI singe for the first runs of the inning. Leon was caught stealing for the second out but Cypress was not done. Nesbitt reached on an error for runners on the corners and freshman right fielder Jonathan Hurst singled for the fourth Charger run. Smith reached on another Gaucho error to load the bases again. Sophomore third baseman Eddie Agredano singled next for the fifth run and Berberet singled for two more. Cypress finally finished it off with an RBI walk by Gerbasi for the eighth and final run. Cypress scored five runs after two outs were down.
Freshman right-hander Brent Bray pitched his first collegiate start for his first collegiate win improving to 1-0. He went six innings allowing one earned run and four hits with three strikeouts. Freshmen Matt Wolfrom, Alec Clifton, and Colby Hyatt shared the next three innings allowing no earned runs and just two hits.
Cypress improves to 14-4 and earns a win before their official conference opener against Irvine Valley Tuesday. This will be Cypress’s first meeting against the Lasers. The two meet in the Orange Empire Conference opener Tuesday at IVC at 2:00 pm.
