Chargers at the Losing End of a Ninth Inning Comeback

Michael Nesbitt Nesbitt was two for four Thursday afternoon.
Cypress suffers second conference loss.

March 13, 2008

Final Stats

Orange, Calif. - Cypress has utilized plenty of late inning dramatics this season to win their fair share of games including a tenth inning homerun Tuesday for a win over Fullerton. This time around, the tide turned the opposite way as Cypress found themselves on the losing end of a ninth inning homerun losing to Orange Coast 7-6. Sophomore left fielder Michael Nesbitt paced the Chargers going two for four including a double for a run scored and an RBI.

The Chargers chipped in a run in the first with back-to-back doubles to get the scoring going. Freshman right fielder Jonathan Hurst hit a two-out double followed by sophomore AJ Smith’s RBI double for the 1-0 lead. Cypress kept up the pace in the second with a lead-off double in the second by Nesbitt to right center. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet followed with a sacrifice bunt moving Nesbitt to third. An RBI single from Garrett Leon followed scoring Nesbitt and giving Cypress the 2-0 lead.

The Pirates got into the action in the second using a couple walks and a double to tie it up 2-2. Cypress scoring slowed to a stop from there while OCC kept it going scoring a run in the third and two in the fifth taking a 5-2 lead over Cypress.

The Chargers mounted their comeback in the seventh with a big four run inning to take back the lead. Freshman center fielder Dennis Gerbasi led off with a single to left center. After an out, sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI double to left to score Gerbasi. Freshman left fielder Tyler Brady came off the bench for an infield single to reach. Freshman Justin McGuire came in to pinch hit and singled to center scoring Marmion for the third straight Charger hit and second run in the inning. McGuire and Brady both moved into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke took advantage with an RBI ground out to score Brady and move McGuire to third. Nesbitt drove in the fourth and final run of the inning with single to center scoring McGuire for the 6-5 lead.

The score held through two innings until the bottom of the ninth. With Cypress just one out away from their fourth straight win, OCC put up a two-run walk-off homerun dealing Cypress the one run loss.

Cypress falls to 17-6 and 3-2 in conference. They go directly into Friday’s action where they will play a rescheduled nonconference game against Long Beach City. The Vikings are 15-8 and are coming off of a 11-5 conference win over LA Harbor. The two meet up Friday at 1:00 pm at Cypress.
