Final Stats
San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Chargers headed north for their annual Spring Break face-off against Cuesta. Cypress found themselves in another one run finish and were on the losing side this time falling 8-7 to Cuesta committing two costly errors. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke paced the Chargers with two RBI while going two for five with two RBI.
Cypress had a shot for an early lead in the first with a man on second and third with no outs. Both runners were stranded there staying scoreless. Cuesta scored the first run of the day with a solo homerun in the second taking the 1-0 lead. Cypress came right back taking the lead with two runs in the third. Sophomore centerfielder Dennis Gerbasi led off with a single and stole second. Freshman third baseman Erik Hempe followed with a walk. Sophomore second baseman Tyler Marmion moved both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs down, Burke drove in the first Charger runs of the day with a double for the 2-1 lead.
The Chargers kept it going in the fourth with three runs. Sophomore first baseman AJ Smith led off with a double. Sophomore second baseman Garrett Leon walked next. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet hit into a fielder’s choice eliminating Smith and reaching first. Gerbasi walked next to load the bases. Hempe cashed in with a two RBI single. Mamion walked to load the bases again and sophomore left fielder Luis Barrera added the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly allowing Gerbasi to tag up and score for the 5-1 lead. Cuesta matched the effort with three fourth inning runs with three back-to-back doubles cutting the Charger lead to 5-4.
Cuesta tied it up in the fifth with another solo homerun and took the momentum into the sixth. Cypress committed two critical infield errors and handed Cuesta three runs and the lead 8-5. Sophomore pitcher Jarrett Semler came in to pitch in the sixth to shut down Cuesta with 2.1 scoreless innings allowing three hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.
Cypress mounted a comeback from there. Marmion led the seventh off with a double followed by a double from sophomore left fielder Jordan Lowe to score Marmion. Burke followed with the third straight hit with a single moving Lowe to third. Freshman designated hitter Jonathan Hurst put up a sacrifice fly as Lowe tagged up to score. The streak would end there as Cypress grounded out and flew out ending the top of the seventh but making up ground cutting the Cuesta lead to one.
The Chargers had their best shot to tie it in the eighth leading off with a single and then an error putting the winning run on base. Both runners would be stranded and the Chargers went down in order in the ninth ending their chance for a comeback and losing by one.
Freshman pitcher Matt Wolfrom suffered the loss falling to 3-3. He pitched two innings allowing one earned run on three hits.
