San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress stayed in San Luis Obispo for their second in three straight games there this time facing Merced. The Chargers found themselves in their sixth straight game determined by just one run and were on the losing end this time losing 5-4 to Merced. Freshman second baseman Brad Woodend led the eighth inning comeback with an RBI single and also scored a run.
The Chargers were stymied through the first seven innings while Merced proceeded to plug away until Cypress was behind 5-0 after the seventh. Errors became Cypress’s demon again allowing two unearned runs which would have made the difference. Cypress was only able to put two runners on through six innings and finally produced their first hit in the seventh.
Cypress strung together a few hits in the eighth for a comeback attempt. After one out, sophomore first baseman Luis Barrera came in and walked followed by a walk by sophomore third baseman Armando Gallardo. Woodend put up the first Charger run of the day with an RBI single scoring Barrera. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion followed up with an RBI single scoring Gallardo and sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi made it three in a row with an RBI single scoring Woodend cutting the Merced lead to two. With the tying run on and two outs, sophomore right fielder Brian Burke brought in one of two runners with another RBI single cutting the lead to 5-4. Now with the winning run on base, Cypress stranded both runners ending the comeback attempt one run short.
Cypress had their last shot in the ninth with a runner reaching on an error but was stranded again as Cypress fell by one run. Freshman Colby Hyatt suffered the loss falling to 1-1 after pitching the first five innings and allowing one earned run on six hits and three strikeouts. Sophomore AJ Smith closed pitching the last 2.2 innings allowing no earned runs on two hits.
The Chargers fall to 18-8 and move on to their final San Luis Obispo game as they face Fresno. Fresno is ranked fourth in Northern California with a 21-7 record coming off of a 3-1 loss to Canyons. The two meet up Thursday at noon at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
