Five Errors Lead to Third Straight Charger Loss

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress finished their week at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo against a tough fourth ranked Fresno team. The Chargers were hoping for their first win of the week but instead committed five errors on the way to a four run loss 8-4. Sophomore pitcher Dale Harder was a bright spot for Cypress allowing no runs and just one hit in three innings of work.
The Chargers started on pace with the Rams. After allowing a homerun and a bases-loaded hit batter Cypress fell behind by two runs in the top of the second. Cypress bounced back with its own solo homerun from sophomore designated hitter AJ Smith. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet followed up with a single and moved to third off a single from freshman second baseman Brad Woodend. Sophomore left fielder Brandon Rohr blasted a sacrifice fly to right allowing Berberet to tag up and score to tie it at two.
It was downhill from there for Cypress as they allowed four runs, three unearned in the third falling behind 5-2. Fresno added another in the fourth and another homerun in the sixth putting Cypress behind 8-2. The Chargers showed some live in the bottom of the sixth with two straight hits for a run. Sophomore shortstop Armando Gallardo doubled followed by a single from freshman centerfielder Jordan Lowe to score Gallardo.
After two more fruitless innings, Cypress put up their last run in the ninth. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke led off with a double and Berberet drove him in with an RBI single for Cypress’s fourth and final run.
Freshman Hunter Hewitt suffered the loss falling to 2-1. He pitched the first 2.1 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two. Sophomore Jarrett Semler followed pitching the next 2.2 allowing two earned runs on five hits and a walk and striking out two. Harder followed shutting the Rams out in the next three innings and freshman Garrett Blanke closed in the last inning allowing one hit and striking out one.
Cypress falls to 17-8 and has a few days off before returning to their home field to continue conference play. They start back up against rival Santa Ana. The Dons are 19-8 and 4-1 in first place in conference. The two meet up for the first time this season Tuesday at Cypress at 2:30 pm.
