Irvine, Calif. - After suffering six straight losses, five of which were by just one run, the Chargers were looking for a break. Thursday provided just that as Cypress came from behind to drive in 14 runs in a 14-10 win over Irvine Valley. Freshman catcher Jonathan Hurst came up big for the Chargers with six RBI going three for six including a double and a home run.
Cypress started with the lead scoring two in the first. Sophomore left fielder Michael Nesbitt singled through the right side and then stole second. Freshman designated hitter Justin McGuire reached on a fielder’s choice and Hurst drove in the first run of the game scoring Nesbitt with a single to right. Sophomore third baseman Eddie Agredano followed up with a single through the left side to score McGuire for a quick 2-0 lead. Cypress added another in the second. Freshman second baseman Garrett Leon led it off with a single to left. After moving to second on a ground out, sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi singled to left center to score Leon for the three run lead.
IVC scored their first run in the second and then added another in the third and the fourth knotting the score up at three. Cypress jumped back out to the lead with two in the fifth. Nesbitt walked and Hurst hit a home run to left for the 5-3 lead. The lead was short lived as the Lasers took their first lead of the game with three runs in the fifth, 6-5.
Cypress took control in the sixth with a big inning. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke reached on an infield error. With two outs down, Cypress produced a big rally. Nesbitt singled through the left side and sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion walked to load the bases. McGuire followed with a walk to score Burke. Hurst broke through with a double to right center bringing all three base runners in to score for the 10-5 lead.
The Chargers piled on another two in the seventh. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet led the inning off with a single through the left side. Leon brought Berberet home with a triple to left. Gerbasi laid down a bunt single and sophomore pinch hitter AJ Smith doubled to left moving Gerbasi to third. Marmion hit a sac fly to right scoring Gerbasi and Smith scored off an IVC catcher error.
