Cypress, Calif. - Three days after putting up 21 hits and 13 runs to blow-out Saddleback, the Gauchos returned the favor. After defeating Saddleback three times in a row this year, Cypress fell short of the sweep allowing 17 Saddleback hits to lose 17-5. Freshman right fielder Justin McGuire was a bright spot for Cypress coming off the bench to score a run and drive in a run while going one for two at the plate.
The first three innings went by quickly and were a misleading indicator of the mayhem to come. The Chargers started with the lead scoring a run in the third. Freshman third baseman Erik Hempe led it off with a double to left and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Parker Berberet. Sophomore centerfielder Dennis Gerbasi hit a bunt single allowing Hempe to score for Cypress’s only lead of the day 1-0.
It all went downhill in the top of the fourth. Saddleback took the lead with a homerun, a double, and an error for three runs. They added a couple in the fifth, and stuck in the dagger in the seventh batting around the order for six more runs for the 11-1 lead. Meanwhile, the Charger offense went c Cypress put runners on first and third in the sixth but stranded them there with a double play.
The Gauchos poured on four more in the eighth before Cypress could put any more runs on the board. In the bottom of the eighth, Nesbitt walked and McGuire singled to right to move Nesbitt to third. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst singled through the right side bringing Nesbitt home after a four inning drought. Freshman left fielder Brad Woodendsingled to move McGuire to third and sophomore first baseman Eddie Agredano brought McGuire home on an RBI fielder’s choice.
Saddleback put up their third home run of the day in the ninth for their final two runs. Cypress managed two more in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore pinch hitter Brandon Rohr led off with a walk. Sophomore first baseman Jordan Lowe moved Rohr over with a bunt single and Nesbitt reached on another walk. McGuire hit into an RBI single to score Rohr and Nesbitt followed on an error as Cypress finished in a twelve run deficit.
Sophomore pitcher Alex Curry suffered the loss pitching the first six innings allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Curry falls to 3-3 this season. Six Charger pitchers came in to relieve allowing a combined 12 earned runs on 11 hits.
Cypress falls to 20-13 and 5-6 in conference. They have a day off before traveling to Riverside to face the defending state champion Tigers. Cypress defeated Riverside earlier this season by one run. The two meet up for the second time this season Thursday at Riverside at 2:30 pm.
