Cypress, Calif. - Cypress was looking for their second win over the Hornets Friday looking to make up some ground in the OEC race. The Chargers scored early and often on their way to an 11-3 rout of Fullerton to get back to .500 in conference. Freshman pitcher Colby Hyatt made his first home start and was near perfect allowing just one hit and no walks in six innings of work.
Freshman third baseman Erik Hempe started the action with the first hit of the day with a single to right and freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst followed with a walk. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion hit a sacrifice bunt that was supposed to move Hempe and Hurst into scoring position. Cypress’s fortunes continued as Marmion’s bunt was mishandled allowing him to reach second and letting Hempe score. With two runners in scoring position, sophomore right fielder Brian Burke picked them up with a single to left scoring two more. With Burke on second, freshman designated hitter Justin McGuire swapped positions with him with a double to center scoring Burke. With two outs down, freshman catcher Parker Berberet hit the third double of the inning to center scoring McGuire for an early 5-0 lead.
After an inning off, the Chargers chipped in one more. Sophomore first baseman Michael Nesbitt led off with a walk and moved to third off a single from Burke. McGuire flew out to center for a sac fly as Nesbitt tagged up to score.
Cypress was at it again in the fifth. Sophomore second baseman Armando Gallardo singled to reach and Berberet cleaned it up with a homerun over the right field wall. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi kept it going with a single followed by an RBI double by Hempe. Hurst produced the second straight double to score Hempe for the fourth run of the inning and tenth in the game.
The action continued in the sixth with Cypress’s eleventh and final run. Gallardo walked and moved to second on a ground out. Gerbasi scored Gallardo with a deep single to left for the 11-0 lead. Fullerton finally got on the board in the eighth with all three of their runs but it was too little too late as Cypress held the Hornets off.
Hyatt improved to 2-1 on the season. He was relieved by sophomore Jarrett Semler who struck out two of the three batters he faced allowing no runners on. Freshman Hunter Hewitt allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk in the eighth. Sophomore AJ Smith closed in the ninth striking out one of the three batters he faced allowing no runners on.
Cypress improves to 22-14 and 7-7 in conference two games behind third place Irvine Valley. They have a day off before their final meeting with Fullerton Thursday. The two meet up again at Fullerton at 2:30 Thursday afternoon.
