The Chargers Pour on the Runs for Second Straight Rout

Brian Burke Burke drove in five runs Thursday afternoon.
Cypress scored 16 runs on 16 hits.

April 17, 2008

Final Stats

Fullerton, Calif. - The Chargers faced rival Fullerton for the final time this season Thursday hoping to gain ground in the Orange Empire Conference standings. Cypress’s determination manifested in runs as Cypress produced 16 in the 16-3 win. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke almost hit for the cycle with a double, triple, and a homerun, just a single short. He finished the day with five RBI and two runs scored.

The action started early for the Charger offense. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst reached on a walk and sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion reached on a fielder’s choice. Burke drove in both with his triple to right center. He came home next as freshman designated hitter Justin McGuire hit into an error for an immediate 3-0 lead.

The top of the lineup came through again in the second on a two-out rally. Sophomore first baseman Michael Nesbitt singled to left center and Hurst doubled to left center to score Nesbitt. Marmion singled to center. Burke followed with his double for the day to score Marmion giving Cypress the commanding 6-0 lead.

The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the second with a run but Cypress answered with one of their own in to top of the third when freshman catcher Parker Berberet blasted a solo homerun. Burke finished his hitting off in the fourth when Marmion walked and Burke homered for two more runs and his fourth and fifth RBI.

Berberet punished Fullerton with another solo homerun in the fifth for the 10-2 lead. Cypress took their only inning off in the seventh before adding one each in the eighth and ninth. Freshman pinch hitter Vinnie Valdez hit Cypress’s fourth homerun of the day in the eighth. Sophomore left fielder Luis Barrera led the ninth off with a double to right center and sophomore designated hitter AJ Smith batted him in with a single to left mercifully ending the Cypress scoring.

Freshman Matt Wolfrom earned the win improving to 5-4 on the season. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore Alex Curry pitched in relief allowing one hit, no runs, and no walks in the next two innings. Freshman Brent Bray pitched in the eighth allowing one hit and no runs. Freshman Alec Clifton finished up in the ninth allowing one earned run off a hit batter and a double.

Cypress improves to 23-14 and 8-7 in conference. They have the weekend off before facing second place Orange Coast. Cypress lost to OCC by one run earlier this season in a dramatic ninth inning Pirate comeback. The Chargers will try to get ahead and stay ahead this time around hosting OCC Tuesday at 2:30 pm.
