Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted first place Santa Ana Tuesday hoping to avoid a season sweep by the Dons. After a one run loss earlier this season and a four run loss Saturday, Cypress bounced back to win the third rivalry matchup 9-5. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion led Cypress with 3 RBI including a two-run homerun going two for three with two runs scored.

After an inning and a half of scoreless action, Cypress got the upper hand in the bottom of the second. Sophomore first baseman AJ Smith led off reaching first on an error. Marmion was hit by a pitch to reach first and push Smith to second. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore second baseman Armando Gallardo popped one up that was lost in the sun over the first baseman’s head to score Smith and moving Marmion to third. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi hit a well placed RBI bunt single as Marmion scored for the 2-0 lead.

Cypress put together a two out rally in the third. Sophomore right fielder Brian Burke singled to center and Smith came through with a double to left center as Burke slid home to score. Marmion kept it going with a two-run homerun and Berberet topped it off with a solo homerun for the 6-0 lead.

Santa Ana fought back with a lead-off homerun in the top of the fourth to end the shutout. Cypress kept the scoring going in the double of the fourth. Sophomore designated hitter Michael Nesbitt led off with a walk. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst followed with a single to center. Burke hit a sacrifice bunt moving both into scoring position and Smith was intentionally walked to load the bases. With just one out down, Marmion singled to left to score Nesbitt but Hurst was thrown out at third. Berberet followed with another single to score Smith but Marmion was thrown out at third to end the inning with Cypress up 8-1.

Santa Ana would not fold scoring two in the top of the fifth cutting the Charger lead to five. Cypress chipped in one in the bottom of the fifth. After two outs with no one on, Freshman third baseman Erik Hempe singled followed by an RBI double by Nesbitt for run number nine while Nesbitt was thrown out at third trying to squeeze out another base.

The Dons kept pace with a run in the top half of the seventh to come back within five. Things got tense in the top of the eighth as the Dons scored one off a double error and then loaded the bases with the tying run at bat with just one out. Freshman pitcher Thomas Hoenshell faced off with the same Dons batter who hit a grand slam Saturday and struck him out and then retired the next hitter to leave the bases loaded and end the Dons threat.

Neither was able to score again as Cypress shut down Santa Ana with a double play to end the game, their third double play of the game. Freshman pitcher Colby Hyatt earned the win improving to 3-1. He pitched the first six innings allowing four earned runs on 11 hits while striking out five. Hoenshell closed for the save pitching the last three innings allowing no earned runs on four hits while striking out three.

Cypress improves to 25-16 and 10-9 in conference. They move on to their final regular season series and will face Golden West twice in a row. Cypress has defeated the Rustlers 17-9 in the OEC mini-tournament and lost 5-4 most recently. The two face off again Thursday at 2:30 at Cypress.
