May 2, 2008

Final Stats

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Cypress closed out their regular season Friday facing Golden West in their second straight matchup. The Chargers made sure to finish strong with a 4-2 road win to end their regular season on a three game win streak. Cypress finishes conference 12-9 in fourth place, one game behind Irvine Valley. Sophomore Luis Diaz led Cypress with a two run homerun.

Golden West got the jump on Cypress with the first score of the day in the bottom of the third off of two singles and a walk. Meanwhile, Cypress stranded three runners including two in scoring position before getting on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet singled and Diaz hit his two-run homerun as Cypress jumped out to the 2-1 lead.

The Chargers kept the Rustlers from scoring in the fourth and then added their last two runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman second baseman Erik Hempe reached on an error and sophomore right fielder Michael Nesbitt followed with a single. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst came through with a two RBI double for the 4-1 lead.

Cypress was unable to score from there but were able to keep the Rustlers at bay. Cypress allowed a solo homerun out of Golden West and nothing else as they held on for the two run win. Sophomore Alex Curry earned the win improving to 5-4 after allowing one earned run off of six hits in five innings of work. Curry also struck out six batters. Sophomore AJ Smith pitched in relief allowing the homerun as the only hit in his two innings on the mound. Sophomore Dale Harder earned the save allowing no runs on no hits in two innings.

Cypress finish the regular season 27-16 and 12-9 in conference. The Chargers must now prepare for playoff action as the ninth seed in Southern California. Cypress will travel to Canyons to face off with the eighth seed Cougars for the first time this season. Canyons finished their season 29-11 and in first place in the Western State South Conference. The two will play a best of three series beginning Friday at 2:00 pm with the second game at 11:00 am Saturday. The third game, if needed, will be played following game two Saturday. All the games will be at Canyons.
