Santa Clarita, Calif. - The Chargers entered playoffs Friday starting a best-of-three series at College of the Canyons. In their biggest game of the season so far, Cypress came up empty as the Chargers were shutout for the first time this year in a 4-0 loss. Freshman pitcher Colby Hyatt held up his end of the game pitching all eight innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four batters.
Cypress got off on the wrong foot going down in order in the first two innings. Cypress got a shot at a two out rally in the third as sophomore second baseman Armando Gallardo doubled to right center and moved to third on a wild pitch. Gallardo would be held up there in what would be Cypress’s best shot at scoring.
Canyons cashed in on their opportunities in the third scoring two unearned runs to take the lead. Cypress’s next shot at scoring was in the sixth. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet singled to right center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi. Berberet would be stranded at second as Cypress’s frustrations continued.
The Cougars came through again in the bottom of the sixth with a two run homerun for their fourth run of the day. Cypress had their last shot, and last man on base in the seventh. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion singled to left and hit second on a passed ball but again was stranded there as Cypress came up empty again. The Chargers only generated four hits and no walks as Canyons’ pitcher threw a complete game shutout allowing no walks.
Cypress has their last shot tomorrow in a do-or-die situation. The Chargers must win two straight games against Canyons Saturday in order to survive and move on to the second round of regionals. Any loss will end their season. Their day begins at noon at Canyons Saturday.
