San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress traveled north to Cuesta Friday to start their three day Super Regional tournament playing for an invitation to the Final Four. The Chargers faced a familiar foe in the first round facing Orange Coast for the fourth time this year after winning just one of their matchups. Cypress evened the season series with a 10-5 win to move on to the second round of the Super Regionals. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Burke led Cypress with two doubles and three RBI on the day.

Cypress took charger early and scored one in the first. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion led off the game with a walk followed by a single to right by sophomore right fielder Michael Nesbitt. A sacrifice bunt by freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst moved Marmion to third and Burke hit an RBI ground out as Cypress took the 1-0 lead.

The Chargers made their biggest run in the second. Sophomore first baseman AJ Smith led off with a single to right followed by another single to right by freshman second baseman Garrett Leon in his first plate appearance after injury sidelined him for much of the end of the season. Sophomore third baseman Eddie Agredano hit into an error on what should have been a sacrifice bunt while Smith and Leon scored. Marmion followed by doubling to center to score Agredano. Nesbitt singled again to score Marmion and then quickly stole second. Burke finished it up with a double to right to score Nesbitt as Cypress took a commanding 6-0 lead.

OCC threatened with two straight solid innings for four runs cutting the Charger lead to two. Cypress kept their distance with a couple runs in the fifth and sixth. Leon doubled to left with a back-to-back double from Agredano to right scoring Leon. In the sixth, Nesbitt doubled to center and Burke switched places with him on a double to left as Nesbitt scored for the 8-4 lead.

The Chargers piled on two more with a couple more hits. Leon hit his second double and third hit of the day to lead off. Agredano singled to right and Leon scored on an error. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi walked to move Agredano to second. Marmion hit a sacrifice bunt to move Gerbasi to third, and Nesbitt hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Agredano for Cypress’s tenth and final run.

Freshman pitcher Colby Hyatt was Cypress’s defensive star pitching a complete game to improve to 4-2 on the season. He allowed five earned runs on ten hits with three strikeouts in nine full innings of work.

Cypress improves to 30-17 and is two wins away from third straight final four. The Chargers play game two of the tournament Saturday against host Cuesta. Cypress has split against Cuesta so far this season winning the first game 6-4 and then losing 8-7. Cuesta got to the second round with a win over Riverside 6-3.
