Early Lead Gives Enough Cushion to Move on to Super Regional Championship

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Chargers faced off against host Cuesta for the third time this season playing for a berth into the Championship round of the Super Regional. Cypress took the lead and held on through the later innings for the 10-6 win. The Chargers must win one more game for a berth into the Final Four tournament next weekend and have up to two chances to do so. Sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion led Cypress in the win going two for four including a double and a homerun for four RBI.
Cypress put one in the books in the first. Marmion led the half inning off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst drove him in with an RBI ground out for the 1-0 lead. Cuesta tied it up in the third but Cypress would match to take back the lead. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet led off for Cypress with a single and reached second on an error. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi moved Berberet to third on a sacrifice bunt. Marmion then drove Berberet in with a sacrifice bunt taking back the one run lead.
The Chargers took control in the fifth with a big inning. Sophomore third baseman Eddie Agredano led off with a single followed by a single from Berberet. Gerbasi was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After one out, sophomore right fielder Michael Nesbitt walked in a run. Hurst cashed in next with a two RBI double scoring Berberet and Gerbasi. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Burke hit into an error allowing Hurst to score for the 7-1 lead.
Cuesta made up some ground in the seventh with a three run homerun and then in the eighth with a two run homerun coming within one run of the Chargers. Cypress held their ground and kept their distance with three runs in the eighth. Agredano singled followed by a single from Berberet. Gerbasi moved them to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and Marmion came through with a three run homerun for the tenth Cypress run.
Sophomore starter Alex Curry earned the win pitching the first six innings allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Sophomore Jarrett Semler pitched 1.1 innings in relief allowing two earned runs on two hits. Freshman Thomas Hoenshell earned the save pitching the final 1.2 innings allowing no hits and no walks and striking out two.
Cypress improves to 31-16 and move on to the championship round of the Super Regionals. The 2007 State Championship finalists will face off as Cypress meets Riverside for the fourth time this season. Cypress is 2-1 against the Tigers so far this year. They will meet up again at 11:00 am Sunday morning. If Cypress wins, they will move on to the Final Four Tournament next weekend. If Cypress loses, they will play Riverside immediately after in a do-or-die game.
