Final Stats
San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Cypress had their backs against the wall Saturday as they played for entry into the Final Four and fought to keep their season alive. The Chargers fought hard but gave up a big inning with seven unearned RCC runs as Cypress lost 11-7 to end their season. Cypress gave up eight unearned runs on four costly errors. The Chargers end their season 31-19 a win short of the Final Four.
The Chargers left a man on third in the first as they could not cash in on their first opportunity. Riverside did the opposite with a single and a double to take the early lead 1-0. Cypress did not make the same mistake in the second as sophomore third baseman Eddie Agredano led off with a single and reached third on two wild pitches. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet hit an RBI ground out as Agredano scored to tie the game at one.
RCC took back the lead with a run in the second but Cypress quickly jumped ahead with three runs in the third. Sophomore center fielder Dennis Gerbasi led off with a walk and sophomore shortstop Tyler Marmion hit a two run homerun for Cypress’s first lead 3-2. Cypress continued as sophomore first baseman Michael Nesbitt singled, moved to second on a walk from freshman left fielder Jonathan Hurst, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore designated hitter Brian Burke. Agredano then hit an RBI ground out for Cypress’s 4-2 lead.
It all fell apart for Cypress in the bottom of the fourth. The half inning started with an infield error, followed by a single, then a hit batter. After a strikeout by freshman pitcher Thomas Hoenshell for just the first out, the problems continued. A single, another infield error, and then a single occurred before Hoenshell struck out the second of the inning. The inning just would not end as the second out was followed by an outfield error, a single, a single, and a wild pitch before it would end. After all the damage was tallied up, Riverside was up 9-4.
Cypress’s offense was left scoreless until the eighth. Burke reached on an error and moved to second on a walk by freshman third baseman Garrett Leon. He moved to third on a wild pitch before freshman second baseman Erik Hempe drove him in with an RBI ground out. Riverside matched the run as Cypress stayed behind by five. The Chargers had one more push in the top of the ninth with a two out rally. Marmion started it off with a single followed by a single from Nesbitt. Hurst then drove both in with a double for Cypress’s seventh run. The scoring was too little too late as Cypress’s season ended behind four runs to the Tigers.
Sophomore AJ Smith suffered the loss falling to 0-1. Smith allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out two. Heonshell pitched 4.2 innings in relief allowing one earned run on eight hits and struck out three. Sophomore Jarrett Semler pitched for the final out allowing no hits. The Charger pitching staff allowed just three earned runs on the game.
