Cypress, Calif. - After just four hits on Tuesday, Cypress did a one-eighty Thursday putting up 22 hits on the day on the way to a blowout. Cypress got the bats going early and played effective defense for a 16-5 win. Sophomore center fielder Rick Eisenberg led Cypress going three-for-three with two doubles and three RBI.
Cypress got it going in the second chipping in a bunch of runs. Freshman designated hitter Travis Garrett led off with a walk and moved to third with a double by Eisenberg. Freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente brought in the first two runs of the game with a single to center. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill added another runner on with a walk and freshman right fielder Christian Ramirez loaded the bases with a single. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales brought in the third run with a single through the left side and sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst scored the fourth with a single to center giving the Chargers the 4-0 lead after two.
Garrett led off in the third as well and this time hit an infield single to reach first beating out the throw. Eisenberg put up his second straight double, this time going down the left field line to score Garrett and run number five. Eisenberg advanced to third on a ground out and Ramirez brought him home with a single through the right side for run number six.
Sophomore right-hander Brent Bray pitched three straight perfect innings striking out eight of the nine Bulldog batters he faced before finally letting the lead-off man on in the fourth with a single. That runner would come back to haunt him as AHC loaded the bases and walked one in and then hit one in cutting the Charger lead to four and ending the shutout.
Cypress matched the Bulldog’s efforts and more in the fourth. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang hit an infield single and moved to third off a single to right by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet. Garrett followed with an RBI double to score Kaupang. Eisenberg picked up RBI number two and three with a single to center. DeLaFuente singled to move Eisenberg to third and Barnhill hit a sacrifice fly to score Eisenberg. Sophomore right fielder Tyler Brady came off the bench and hit the first pitch for a single to left. Morales followed by driving a double to center scoring DeLaFuente and Brady. When all was said and done in the inning, Cypress extended their lead to 12-2.
The Charger bench began to empty in the fifth. Sophomore left fielder Mark Hewitt took advantage of a catcher error on a strikeout to reach second. Freshman right fielder David Silvas came in to pinch hit and produced an RBI double to center. Silvas took advantage of a throwing error on the next batter to score run number 14.
Hancock scored a couple more as Cypress tested out new pitchers in every inning. Cypress scored their final two in the sixth. Freshman catcher Matt Rush singled and advanced to second on a single from Hurst and then third on a fielder’s choice by freshman centerfielder Jordan Foreman. Hewitt singled to right to score Rush and then freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier singled to left to score Foreman for the 16th and final run.
Bray earned the win pitching five innings and striking out nine batters. He allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Cypress improves to 1-1 and has no time off as they head south to take on San Diego Mesa. The two meet up Friday at 2:00 pm at Mesa.
