Slow Start Picks up Steam in Charger Win over Olympians

San Diego, Calif. - Cypress played their first road game of the 2009 season driving south to San Diego Mesa to take on the Olympians. The Chargers got behind early but quickly picked up the pace starting in the fourth for the 11-3 win, their second straight big win. Freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente keyed the Charger rally with a two run homerun in the fourth.
Mesa got the scoring going first with two runs in the third to take the lead. Cypress quickly took the lead from there with four runs in the fourth led by a two-run homerun by DeLaFuente. The Olympians pushed for another run in the fourth cutting the Charger lead to one. Cypress added another in the fifth with a solo homerun by freshman catcher Parker Berberet to retake the two run lead and then burst ahead by five with three runs in the sixth.
Cypress kept scoring with three late inning runs while Mesa’s bats went silent. Freshman pitcher Ray Hanson earned the win pitching the first five innings allowing three runs. Hanson was supported by four straight scoreless innings from freshman Travis Garrett in the sixth, sophomore Matt Wolfrom in the seventh, and sophomore Colby Hyatt in the eighth and ninth.
Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales led Cypress with three hits including a double for two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore centerfielder Rick Eisenberg had his second straight three hit performance for an RBI and two runs scored.
The Chargers improve to 2-1 and return home Saturday to take on Allan Hancock again. Cypress defeated AHC 16-5 on Thursday. The two meet up at Cypress at 1:00 pm Saturday.
