Cypress, Calif. - After a blowout of Allan Hancock Thursday, Cypress was looking for more of the same Saturday as they took on the Bulldogs again. Cypress was stunned as Hancock scored three runs in the ninth as the Chargers lost 6-5. Sophomore right fielder Tyler Brady led Cypress with the go ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh with a clutch two-out, two RBI double.
Cypress set the pace with a run in the first. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet slapped a pitch down the right field line for a double. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang drove in the run with a single to left as Berberet raced home to score for the early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore right-hander Richard Hanson pitched himself out of a bases full jam in the second to keep the Bulldogs scoreless. With a runner on third in the third, Cypress pulled off a rare fielder’s choice double play with a runner on third tagging the runner, then the hitter as he tried to advance to second.
Cypress chipped in another in the third. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet reached on a walk and then second on a wild pitch. As Cypress hit into a Bulldog error, Berberet raced in to score again for Cypress’s second run.
AHC got on the board in the fourth off a walk and two straight singles. Cypress avoided more damage by turning another double play to move on to the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs came back to even up the score at two in the fifth off a hit and a controversial wild pitch call putting the pressure on the Charger offense.
Cypress came through right away. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales led off with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Kaupang came through for his second RBI with a single to left to score Morales and take back the one run lead.
The Bulldogs would not go away hitting a double who moved to third on a fly out and then tagged up to score on a sacrifice fly tying it up again at three a piece. Cypress broke it open in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman designated hitter Travis Garrett doubled. Kaupang was intentionally walked and Brady came off the bench to drive a double to right scoring two for the 5-3 lead.
It came down to the ninth with freshman right-hander Matt Rush on the mound for Cypress. Rush allowed a single and a walk for two on and the Bulldogs hit a three-run homer to take their first lead of the game just in time 6-5.
Cypress had their last shot in the bottom of the ninth. The Chargers came up empty grounding out, and striking out twice in a row as the game ended with a Hancock win. Hanson pitched 4.1 innings striking out three batters and allowing two earned runs. Sophomore right-hander Jayson Huett came in to relieve pitching 3.1 innings for four strikeouts and one earned run.
Cypress falls to 2-2 and has a few days off before getting back to action Tuesday to host Cuesta. The Cougars are 3-2 coming off of a 5-4 win over Orange Coast. The two meet up Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
