Cypress Hits Their Way to 15 Run Blowout

Cypress, Calif. - The Chargers returned home Tuesday afternoon to take on San Diego Mesa for the second time this season. After a commanding 11-3 win, Cypress took down the Olympians again with a 15-7 win. Sophomore right-hander Colby Hyatt earned the win pitching the first five innings striking out four batters and allowing just one run on three hits.
After a quiet inning and a half, Cypress got their bats going in the bottom of the second. Freshman designated hitter Travis Garrett led off with a walk and reached second on a wild pitch. With two outs down, sophomore centerfielder Rick Eisenberg brought home the first run with a double down the left field line to score Garrett. Freshman third baseman Cypress improves to 7-2 and has a couple days off before hosting Antelope Valley on Friday at 2:00 pm. The Mauraders are 0-3-1 and.delafuented.aspx">Dimitri DeLaFuente followed with a single up the middle to score Eisenberg and then advanced to second on the throw. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill duplicated DeLaFuente’s single to score run number three to close out the inning with the 3-0 lead.
Mesa used a couple hits and an error in the fourth to get a run on the board. Cypress matched the run and more in the fourth. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst led off with a single to center. DeLaFuente hit a single through the left side to move Hurst to second. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez scored Hurst off a sacrifice fly to left. Freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales hit a single to right as DeLaFuente scored from second for the 5-1 lead.
Cypress piled on a handful of runs in the sixth. Barnhill led off with a single and was safe at third after Ramirez hit into an error. Morales brought in both runners with a single. Kaupang moved Morales to third with a double down the right field line. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier came off the bench to keep the action going with a single to right scoring Morales. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet added a single to center to score Kaupang. Freshman left fielder Mark Hewitt came off the bench to add the sixth and final hit of the inning to score LeVier and hand Cypress a commanding nine run lead.
The Olympians put together a strong inning in the seventh with four singles, a double, and a rare two RBI sacrifice fly to cut the Charger lead to 10-5. Sophomore right-hander Richard Hanson came in to finish the inning and end the bleeding forcing a pop up to left ending the Olympian at-bat. Cypress added a couple in the bottom of the inning. Barnhill led off with a walk and moved to third off Ramirez’s single. Barnhill scored off a wild pitch while Ramirez moved to third. Kaupang cleared the bases with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Ramirez for Cypress’s twelfth run.
The late inning scoring continued with Mesa putting up a couple more in the eighth. On Cypress’s turn, freshman left fielder David Silvas came off the bench and punched a double down the right field line. DeLaFuente followed with a double to center to switch places as Silvas scored. Barnhill followed with a single to center to score DeLaFuente for the 15th and final run of the game.
Freshman Matt Hixson came in to relieve Hyatt in the sixth and made an immediate impact striking out two straight on the way to eliminating the Olympian batters in order. Hixson pitched 1.2 innings allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Sophomore Richard Hanson pitched the next 1.1 innings allowing three hits and two earned runs. DeLaFuente came off of third to pitch in the ninth striking out two batters and allowing no hits.
Cypress improves to 7-2 and has a couple days off before hosting Antelope Valley on Friday at 2:00 pm. The Mauraders are 0-3-1 and.
