Cypress Unable to Catch the Panthers in One Run Loss

Cypress, Calif. - Cypress hosted Chaffey in a Valentine’s Day match-up. The Chargers fell behind early, caught up, fell behind again, and then ran out of innings to make up lost ground losing by one run, 7-6. Freshman pitcher Travis Garrett led Cypress at the plate going two-for-three with a run and an RBI. Garrett then struggled from the mound giving up four runs in the seventh inning suffering the loss as his record fell to 1-1.

Chaffey started in on the Chargers early with a two-run homerun in the first. Cypress struggled early stranding two runners in the first and a runner on third in the second inning. Meanwhile, Chaffey added another in the third inning with an unearned run taking the 3-0 lead.

Cypress finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. Sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez led off with a walk followed by a single by freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales. Ramirez then scored off a wild pitch while Morales moved to third. Garret brought in Cypress’s second run with a sacrifice fly to left as Ramirez tagged up and scored cutting the Chaffey lead to one.

The Chargers kept the Panther offense at bay and then caught up in the fifth inning. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang reached on an error and moved to second when Garrett was hit by a pitch. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet laid down a sacrifice bunt moving both into scoring position. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst hit an RBI ground-out as Garrett scored tying it up at three.

The top of the seventh proved to be Cypress’s downfall. Cypress gave up four runs off four hits and four walks as Cypress found themselves behind again 7-3. Cypress would not give in as they attempted to catch the Panthers again. The offense got going immediately. Kaupang hit a double down the rightfield line followed by a single by Garrett to center. Berberet then doubled to right to score Kaupang moving Garrett to third. Garret scored on a wild pitch and the Panther lead was cut to two.

Cypress had their last shot in the bottom of the ninth. Garrett came through again leading off with a single to center and was replaced by freshman Jordan Foreman to run. Berberet singled to right to advance Foremen to second and Hurst moved both over with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman David Silvas came in to pinch hit and hit into an RBI fielder’s choice as Foreman scored and Berberet was out at third. With Silvas as the tying run at first and two outs, Cypress struck out ending the game down one.

Freshman Ray Hanson started the game pitching five innings allowing two earned runs and striking out five. Sophomore Jayson Huett pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing no runs and just one hit.

Cypress falls to 7-3 and has a couple days off before hosting Porterville. The Pirates are 1-7 so far this season. The two meet up at Cypress at 2:00 pm Tuesday barring any rain delays.
