Cypress, Calif. - Cypress took on Porterville Wednesday afternoon in the last game before a tough road trip Friday. The Chargers were their own worst enemy early making six errors but recovered on offense for the 11-6 win. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang led Cypress from the plate with four RBI including a homerun.

After a rocky start, sophomore pitcher Richard Hanson came in under unenviable circumstances in the top of the first. With one out, the bases loaded, and a 2-0 count, Hanson struck out one and forced a ground out to end the half inning with no damage done.

Cypress was not as lucky in the second making two errors allowing two unearned runs. Cypress answered in the third with their first run. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill started it off with a single followed by a walk from sophomore right fielder Christian Ramirez and then a single by freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales to load the bases. Kaupang took advantage with a sacrifice fly to left to score Barnhill for Charger run number one.

After more Charger errors in the fourth and fifth, Porterville built up a commanding 6-1 lead over Cypress. The Chargers erased that in one half inning in the bottom of the fifth. Ramirez led off with a walk followed by a Morales single. Kaupang hit into an error allowing Ramirez to score. Freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier bashed a double to right center to score Morales. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet hit into a deep error at the wall for the Pirates centerfielder as Berberet moved to third and Kaupang and Levier scored. Freshman centerfielder Jordan Foreman tied it up with a single to center as Berberet scored for the 6-6 tie.

Cypress kept the bats going in the sixth. Ramirez led off again with a walk and Kaupang hit a long ball over the fence for the first Charger lead 8-6. The Chargers lined up a couple doubles with one down the left field line from Berberet and then one to left center from sophomore left fielder Mark Hewit to score another. With sophomore left fielder Tyler Brady running for Hewitt, Brady scored off an infield single and error of the bat of freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente for the 10-6 lead.

Berberet finished it off with a solo homerun to lead off the bottom of the eighth for the eleventh Charger run. Freshman Richard McLaughlin earned the win improving to 1-0 on the season. He pitched two innings allowing just one hit and no walks. Sophomore Richard Hanson pitched the bulk of the game allowing one earned run in 3.2 innings of work. Freshman Gabriel Garcia pitched the most effective inning striking out all three batters he faced.

Cypress improves to 8-3 and has just a day off before a tough road trip to Las Vegas. The Chargers will be hosted by Southern Nevada and take on three tough out-of-state teams. Cypress will start Friday at CCSN against Miami Dade at 4:00 pm.
