Cypress Finishes Weekend with a Win and Two Losses

Las Vegas, Nevad. - Cypress made their annual trip east to Las Vegas over the weekend to play three straight games against some challenging out-of-state competition. The Chargers had a win bookended by losses as they lost to Miami-Dade, beat Salt Lake City, and then lost to host Southern Nevada. Sophomore pitcher Colby Hyatt earned the win against Salt Lake pitching the first six innings allowing no earned runs and striking out six.

The Chargers started their trip coming off of the bus to take on Miami Dade. Miami Dade started with the lead with two in the first, third, and third for a 6-0 lead. Cypress finally scored on in the fifth and sixth but it was not enough as Cypress fell 8-2. The Chargers committed some costly errors giving up five while the Cypress offense was held stagnant. Sophomore centerfielder Rick Eisenberg led the Chargers going two-for-four including a homerun. Freshman Gabe Garcia suffered the loss falling to 1-2. He pitched the first 4.1 innings striking out six batters but allowing six earned runs. Freshman Richard McLaughlin held Miami in the next 2.2 innings allowing no runs and striking out five. Sophomore Matt Wolfrom pitched in the eighth allowing no hits and no walks in his inning of work.

Cypress recovered on Saturday against Salt Lake City. This time, Cypress started with the two run lead before SLCC evened the score in the third thanks to Cypress errors. The Charger offense continued to score as they held Salt Lake City to two runs on the way to the 9-2 win. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang drove in two RBI while freshman designated hitter Travis Garrett went two-for three with a run and an RBI.

The road trip ended against host Southern Nevada on Saturday and proved to be an offensive showdown. Southern Nevada got out to a big lead with a seven run third inning. Cypress put up four in the fifth and six in the eighth but Southern Nevada kept up the scoring as well as they defeated Cypres 16-13. Cypress allowed two grand-slams from the same Southern Nevada batter. Cypress was led by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet who went four-for-five including a double and a homerun for three RBI. Kaupang also added three RBI along with two doubles. Freshman shortstop Dimitri DeLaFuente went three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

Cypress falls to 9-5 and has just a couple days off before returning home to take on Antelope Valley Tuesday in a rescheduled game. The two meet up Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Cypress.
