Final Stats
Cypress, Calif. - Cypress played a rescheduled game Tuesday afternoon taking on Antelope Valley in their final game before conference. The Marauders kept up at first but Cypress got hot on offense for the 17-6 win. Sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang was the highlight of the day hitting for the cycle with a single, double, triple, and a homerun to finish with five RBI and three runs scored.
Cypress got scoring first chipping in a run in the first with a two out mini-rally. Kaupang produced Cypress’s first hit with an infield shot to short and beat out the throw to first for his single. The throw to first was underthrown for an error allowing Kaupang to move into scoring position. Sophomore catcher Parker Berberet followed up with a hit through the left side as Kaupang scored for the 1-0 lead.
The Charger defense prevented a run in the second. With the bases loaded, the infield converted a double play to escape the inning without damage. It fell apart for Cypress in the top of the third giving up five runs on four hits and an error falling behind 5-1.
The Charger offense continued to plug away undaunted. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill singled and then scored off a double to the fence by sophomore center fielder Rick Eisenberg. The top of the lineup went to work as sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst hit a tricky one through the infield to score Eisenberg. Kaupang evened the score on one swing with a two-run homerun over the right field fence tying it at five runs. Cypress was not done in the inning. Berberet followed the homerun with a single and stole second. Freshman right fielder Jordan Foreman gave Cypress the lead with a single through the right side as Berberet raced in to touch home.
The Marauders came back with a run in the fifth to tie it up again at six. After two scoreless innings, Cypress punished the new AVC pitcher in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman shortstop Stephan Kungl led of with a single to right center. Sophomore Tyler Brady came in to run and immediately scored off a hit-and-run double by Barnhill. Eisenberg made it back-to-back doubles to score Barnhill with a shot to center. Kaupang hit his double down the left field line as Eisenberg scored. With Kaupang on base, freshman designated hitter Corey LeVier came off the bench to hit a two-run homerun over the right field fence as Cypress finished the inning up big, 11-6.
Cypress continued the scoring in the seventh. Sophomore left fielder Mark Hewitt came in and singled. Freshman right fielder David Silvas replaced him after a fielder’s choice. Hurst reached on a single, and Kaupang completed the cycle with a triple off the centerfield wall to score both and extend the Charger lead to seven runs.
The scoring ended in the eighth. Foreman led off with a single followed by a single by freshman third baseman Dimitri DeLaFuente. Hewitt hit into a fielder’s choice to switch places with DeLaFuente and Barnhill was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Silvas delivered with a two RBI single and Hurst followed with a single for another RBI. Freshman first baseman Chris Coleman hit one right over third base for another RBI, Cypress’s 24th hit and their 17th and final run.
Freshman pitcher Ray Hanson earned the win to improve to 3-0. He pitched one inning for two strikeouts allowing no hits and no walks. Freshman Richard McLaughlin got the start pitching the first 2.1 innings striking out three and allowing four earned runs on seven hits. Freshman Matt Treybig relieved pitching 2.2 innings with no earned runs and two strikeouts. Sophomores Colby Hyatt, Matt Wolfrom, and Brent Bray closed out the last three innings combining to allow no hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
Cypress improves to 10-5 and moves on to conference play. The Chargers will open conference hosting Orange Coast. The Pirates are 8-5 coming off of a 12-9 win over Chaffey. The two open conference Thursday at Cypress at 2:00 pm.
