Santa Ana, Calif. - Cypress and Santa Ana faced renewed their rivalry for 2009 as they faced off at Santa Ana. The Chargers squeezed out a win over the Dons 11-10. Sophomore center fielder Ricky Eisenberg paced Cypress with going three-for-five with an RBI and a run scored.
The Chargers jumped out to the lead in the second taking advantage of Santa Ana errors. Eisenberg started it off with a single up the middle and reached second on a failed fielder’s choice hit by freshman shortstop Johnathan Morales. Both moved into scoring position after a ground out. Eisenberg and Morales then scored off of two straight Santa Ana errors as the Dons defense continued to suffer. Sophomore left fielder Jonathan Hurst and sophomore first baseman Stephen Kaupang hit back-to-back RBI singles as Cypress took the 4-0 lead.
Cypress piled on a few more in the fourth. Freshman second baseman Mike Barnhill hit into another Santa Ana error and scored off a triple down the rightfield line by freshman right fielder Christian Ramirez. Hurst reached on a walk to put runners on the corners and Ramirez scored off a sacrifice fly by Kaupang. Hurst later scored off another Santa Ana error for a commanding 7-0 lead.
Cypress chipped in one more in the fifth. Barnhill singled to right and reached third off a walk and hit batter. Kaupang hit yet another sacrifice fly as Barnhill scored. With Cypress up 8-0, the Santa Ana offense awoke and took off scoring a run in the fifth. They then tore in with five runs in the sixth cutting the Charger lead to two runs.
Cypress extended their lead in the eighth. Hurst led off with a walk and was replaced by sophomore Tyler Brady. Brady stole second and scored off a double by sophomore catcher Parker Berberet. Freshman designated hitter Jordan Foreman switched places with Berberet with a double down the right field line. Eisenberg drove in the eleventh and final Charger run with a single up the middle to score Foreman.
Cypress held the 11-6 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Santa Ana’s offense would not give in scoring two in the eighth. They had their final chance in the ninth with a three run deficit. The Dons scored twice but stranded two runners on as Cypress held on to a one run win.
Freshman Ray Hanson earned the win improving to 4-0 allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings. Sophomore Jayson Huett earned the save pitching the final 3.2 innings allowing four earned runs in five innings.
Cypress improves to 12-6 and 2-0 in conference. The Chargers have a few days off before hosting Irvine Valley Tuesday at 2:00 pm.
